Core Facilities

The NHLBI Division of Intramural Research maintains and supports several state-of-the-art core facilities that are available to all NHLBI researchers at no cost to laboratories or investigators.  Each core is headed by an experienced NHLBI scientist and staffed with technical help to assist in executing the techniques supported by the core.  Fellows are especially encouraged to take advantage of the core facilities, and training sessions are scheduled by core directors in response to requests.

Animal MRI/Imaging Core
MRI of mouse heart

AMRI is a resource for magnetic resonance imaging of rodents in NHLBI. Its mission is to develop and optimize MRI methods for cardiovascular imaging of mice and rats, to facilitate implementation of imaging studies

Flow Cytometry Core
Picture of flow cytometer The NHLBI Flow Cytometry Core Facility provides investigators at the NHLBI access to state-of-the-art flow cytometry consultation to investigators who have cytometers available in their own laboratories or branches.
Gene Expression Core
Picture of affymetrix chip This facility provides NHLBI investigators high quality, state-of-the-art gene expression profiling & genotyping services in a timely fashion using the Affymetrix platform. Integrated service is also provided to investigators in a collaborative manner for the design of microarray experiments, target preparation and streamlined data analysis applying complex statistical tools.
Laboratory of Animal Medicine and Surgery (LAMS)
Picture of LAMS This laboratory is responsible for providing support services on all aspects of animal care and use, including animal husbandry, surgical support, anesthesia, perioperative care, after-hour emergency coverage, and all veterinary care.
Light Microscopy Core
Light micrograph of cardiac muscle The facility provides state of the art equipment, training, and image processing capabilities to researchers within the NHLBI-DIR. Available pieces of equipment are confocal, two-photon, and standard epi-fluorescence widefield microscopes.
NIH MRI Research Facility(NMRF)/Mouse Imaging Facility(MIF)
MRI of mouse brain The NIH MRI Research Facility (NMRF) / Mouse Imaging Facility (MIF) is a shared, intramural resource for human and animal imaging studies. The NMRF/MIF is supported by all Institutes at NIH.
Pathology Core
Picture of EM The facility provides analysis using transmission and scanning electron microscopy, video image morphometric analysis, and confocal laser scanning microscopy.
Proteomics Core
Image of Proteomics Data The Core maintains state-of-the-art mass spectrometers, provides guidance to sample preparation, trains scientists and research fellows for the use of instrument and data analysis, and develops analytical methodologies relevant to proteomics.
Electron Microscopy Core
Picture of SEM This core provides contemporary transmission electron optical services, including transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy of cells and tissues, immunocytochemistry
at the electron microscopic level including immuno-gold labeling, negative staining or rotary shadowing of macromolecule preparations (nucleic acids or proteins), computer-assisted morphometry and image analysis.
Transgenic Mouse Core
Picture of Mouse Egg The facility is a state-of–the-art transgenic mouse laboratory assisting scientists making transgenic and knockout mice. The staff at the facility are responsible for culturing, transfecting, and selecting ES cells, as well as microinjecting and implanting mouse embryos.
